Kelsey Hendrix finds that ALAN BERNARD of Plus Rooms can make extending your home stress-free.
Q: Tell us about Plus Rooms…

A: Plus Rooms was formed seven years ago by myself. My background has always been in building, having worked for another building company for a number of years before eventually becoming director. When the company was bought out I looked to specialise in kitchen extensions as there was a clear gap in the market.

Q: How has the business developed?

A: The business went from strength to strength, making it possible to introduce loft conversions. Since we specialise in terraced properties it made sense to branch into lofts. We then looked at other areas that could complement our business and opened up Plus Rooms Kitchens, which supplies and fits a wide range of units and caters for every style and budget. All our projects are in the local London area, working on Victorian and Edwardian terraced properties.

Q: Talk me through the extension process…

A: When an enquiry comes into the office, our carefully trained team guide you through the various stages of the build. Firstly, an appointment will be set up with myself. I will then visit the site and discuss your options, making design suggestions, talking you through the process of planning permission – and the extending / refurbishment process as a whole – and offering you the option to view previous work carried out by Plus Rooms in the area. Once you proceed with the project, a nominal deposit will be taken. The architect will then contact you to make an appointment to survey the property and a build date will be set, subject to planning permission. James Bernard, the project co–ordinator, will take over the management of the build from this stage, liaising with the site foreman and the customer until completion of the project.

Q: What projects have you worked on?

A: Our projects have primarily been kitchen extensions, but recently we have had an increase in demand for loft conversions and complete house refurbishments.

Q: What is the typical type of south-west London property you work on?

A: Typically in south-west and south-east London we specialise in kitchen side return extensions with a pitched roof, as well as loft conversions.

Q: How much does an average extension cost? A: On average, to build a side return on a terraced property would be approximately £30,000 to £35,000, and a loft conversion on a similar property would be about £35,000, built to a builders finish and ready to decorate.
Q: I’m thinking about extending my home, what kind of advice can you offer to me?

A: If you are thinking about extending you home use a company like Plus Rooms that can handle the whole project from start to finish and can guarantee a high standard of work with a personal touch, that only a family business can give. Call in a local estate agent to see what value an extension might add to your home, and always check the building company are members of The Federation of Master Builders.
